Kecskemét's Expansion Signals a Flexible Blueprint for European EV Production

Mercedes-Benz's €1bn upgrade of its Hungarian plant pairs battery-electric core-model output with digital twin technology, offering a template for resilient, demand-responsive manufacturing amid weakening China sales.
Mercedes-Benz has completed a €1bn expansion of its Kecskemét plant in Hungary, according to Just Auto, enlarging the site from 200 to 440 hectares and making it the company's largest facility in Hungary and one of its biggest globally. The investment, framed within the group's Business Plan 2022–2026, adds two bodywork and assembly halls, a press shop, a paint shop and a dedicated battery assembly facility. Most notably, the plant will now produce the electric C-Class, described by the company as the first battery-electric core model built there, alongside the GLB and a smaller version of the G-Class reserved exclusively for Hungarian output.
For automotive leaders, the significance lies less in the headline sum than in the operating model it enables. Mercedes-Benz's local-for-local approach means body components and drive batteries for the GLB and electric C-Class will be produced on-site, shortening supply chains at a moment when geopolitical and logistical exposure remains a persistent boardroom concern. Equally instructive is the decision to keep existing lines flexible, running combustion and electric models together, while ring-fencing the newly built hall solely for EV output. This dual-track structure allows the company to hedge against uneven demand for electrification without committing the entire site to a single technology path, a balance many manufacturers are still struggling to strike.
The link between Kecskemét and the Rastatt plant in Germany, which Just Auto reports allows output to be shifted according to demand, points to a broader network logic rather than a standalone site upgrade. Michael Schiebe, the board member responsible for production, quality and supply chain management, described the aim as strengthening the resilience and flexibility of the global production network, language that reflects a wider industry shift towards manufacturing footprints designed for volatility rather than fixed volume assumptions. The plant's digital infrastructure reinforces this intent: the MO360 platform links production, quality and supply chain data across sites, while a Digital Factory Twin built on NVIDIA's Omniverse platform, said to be the company's first such deployment, offers a full digital replica of an assembly hall. AI-driven camera systems for defect detection during manufacturing further illustrate how quality assurance is being embedded directly into digital production tools rather than treated as a separate process.
The expansion also arrives against a challenging sales backdrop, with Mercedes-Benz reporting an 8% year-on-year decline in second-quarter 2026 global deliveries, driven by a 30% drop in China that gains in Europe and North America failed to offset. Leaders should watch whether the Kecskemét model, combining flexible lines, digital twins and AI-based quality control, becomes a template extended to other sites, and whether the local-for-local battery and component strategy proves sufficiently resilient if demand patterns shift further away from current assumptions.
